Apprentices and maids are the only two groups of workers not covered by the minimum wage policy, according to Human Resources Minister Richard Riot Jaem. He explained: “As long as they are apprentices, they are not regarded as workers as yet. This is because they are still learners (on the job)”. As for maids, he noted some were paid higher than others. While Budget 2014 has allocated about RM400 million to upskill the nation’s workforce, there is so far no further word on the minimum wage policy.
