On the 24th September, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) successfully achieved orbit around the red planet, ten months after its launch from the Satish Dawan Space Center. It joins four other satellites currently in orbit, making the Indian Space Research Organisation the fourth space agency to reach Mars. India has also received the honour of becoming the first nation to reach Mars orbit on its first attempt, and the first Asian nation to do so. Twenty-four hours after reaching orbit, MOM released its first phot of the planet. NASA space probe Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN Mission (MAVEN) achieved orbit two days prior to MOM and there are plans to coordinate observations and science analyses between the two orbiters
